The lighthouse is a very important
facility of navig-
ation and transportation. In early years, it was
applied to the military affairs and climate
forecasting. In the latter part of Manchu Dyn.,
the
lighthouses were imported from England and France
.
The manu facturer cast the body, the lamps and the
lanterns of the lighthouse previously, then shipped
it to the place where forespoken to build the
lighthouse. Finally, the manufacturer assembled
it as
the skills of shipbuilding. I ts construction work
was
started in 1899 and took 3 years to be done.
Meanwhile Japan had reigned over Taiwan for
couple years. |

The lighthouse was not
assembled by cast iron. It was made by double bricks
and
it could endure quake. This technology was called
“Lian-wa-shi-zao” in
Japanese. That was also the special part of it. The
body of the lighthouse was
built by laying bricks; the top of the lighthouse
bond by huge stones became the
truss to hold on the casting steeple top. The lamps,
the lanterns, the prisms and
the heavy hammer instruments of the lighthouse were
imported from France .
The lighthouse also conserved the clock made by Shanghai
Hardware Bureau.
Baishajia Lighthouse is a white lighthouse with the
height of 37 meters. It stands
out majestically near the coast in Guanyin Shiang.
Since the inauguration, it has
been a wonderful view of Toayuan coast. Though it
went through several times of
earthquakes and typhoons and even strafed by allied
military aircrafts during the
Second World War. However, the lighthouse has stood
towering like a giant and
has been shining Formosa Strait at till now. |
